Zuri Dale – From Pandemic to Endemic

PresentationWith COVID-19 shifting to an endemic phase many are faced with the complexity of returning to normalcy, whilst safeguarding their health and security. This presentation discusses what the world will look like when COVID-19 is an endemic disease, what we can learn from seasonal influenza, and the reality of managing future outbreaks.

Zuri Dale is an infectious disease epidemiologist and public health scientist, at Texas Southern University whose current scientific work places special emphasis in the epidemiology of infectious diseases. She  is currently in pursuit of her Doctoral degree from Mercer University. Zuri served as a STEP and Thomas F. Freeman Honors Scholar at TSU, and an LSAMP fellow Texas A&M. Zuri is a member of the American Public Health Association, designated a Moderna Global Medical Expert, serves on the Moderna Advisory Board for COVID-19, and has held teaching assignments at both TSU and Princeton University. Zuri serves as the Director of the TSU COVID Prevention Center and was more recently appointed to Executive Director of the Center for Transformative Health.

Tanya Debose is an activist, organizer and advocate for preserving African American history and culture. Based on her experience, she founded the Preserving Communities of Color Initiative that focuses on preserving historic communities of color by transforming them into inclusive communities and cultural destinations. The initiative consists of an annual conference and gathering of community advocates, leaders, scholars and elected officials. Additionally, the initiative provides support to historic communities of color connecting them with resources, tools and other support.

Debose’s recent work is strategically focused on organizing Texas. Through her efforts she is creating a statewide consortium of heritage councils to serve as a catalyst for promoting the protection of African American history and culture in Texas.

Annetra Piper – Write the Vision, Make it Plain

Presentation: This workshop will provide a brief overview of grant writing, including tips and information to help your grant writing be successful. This overview will share grant basics and what you need to do to get started.

Dr. Annetra Piper is a certified grants specialist with more than 20 years of experience in grant writing and grants management. Her specialty and focus are on education, youth, and the elderly. Annetra has written and assisted others in writing thousands of grants during her tenure, which have garnered almost $800 million in grant funds. Dr. Piper understands the ins and outs of grant writing and grants management. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston in Houston, Texas, a master’s degree from Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas, and a doctoral degree from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. She is the author of two books. Annetra was an educator for several years prior to becoming involved in grant writing. She recently retired as the Manager of the Grants Department for Houston Independent School District. Dr. Piper volunteers with several non-profit and service organizations in addition to writing grants for nonprofits and providing grant writing classes through her company, A. Piper and Associates. Her daily mantra is that she will do whatever it takes to “make the lives of children, parents, educators, and community better.”
